Madrid, the second European city with airport access by metro and commuter train

The scheduled commuter train service to Barajas airport which began on 23rd September makes it the second European airport with metro and commuter train links, after London Heathrow.

Madrid, the second European city with airport access by metro and commuter train

(30/09/2011)  The new 8.8-kilometre access route, built at a cost of 218.31 million Euros, connects the city centre with Barajas airport, allowing passengers to reach Terminal T-4 by means of a new Commuter C-1 line that will link the stations of Príncipe Pío and Aeropuerto T-4 via Atocha and Recoletos.

As from today, the new service consists of Civia trains running every 30 minutes between Príncipe Pío and T-4. The first airport-bound train set off at 5.15, and the first service in the opposite direction departed at 5.59. The last train from Príncipe Pío will leave at 23.32 and the last service from the airport at 00.15.

Passengers will now be able to reach the new Barajas Terminal 4 Commuter station in 38 minutes from Príncipe Pío, 25 minutes from Atocha, 18 minutes from Nuevos Ministerios, and just 11 minutes from Chamartín station.

The track system installed in the new rail link is equipped with three rails to cater for both Iberian gauge Commuter trains and international gauge High Speed trains, which will allow the AVE to serve the airport in the near future.

Connection with other trains

Line C-1 will provide connections with Renfe’s High Speed, Long Distance and Medium Distance trains at Atocha and Chamartín, thus allowing air passengers arriving in Madrid to use this new Commuter service to connect with other train destinations and vice versa.

The new Aeropuerto T-4 station, number 101 in the Madrid Commuter network, has modern facilities, wider than normal turnstiles for easy access with suitcases, and vending machines from which passengers can buy tickets for Renfe’s entire range of products. The information will also be provided in English.
