In the course of the visit of His Majesty the King Felipe VI to Saudi Arabia, the Minister for Public Works Íñigo de la Serna has ratified the preliminary agreement reached at the end of November 2016 between the Mecca AVE Consortium and the Saudi authorities to establish new deadlines and prices for the work.

The Minister took advantage of the visit to meet with the President of the Saudi Railways Organization (SRO), Rumaih Bin Mohammed Al-Rumaih, with whom he tackled the high-speed connection between the cities of Medina and Mecca.

Connections have also been established in order to facilitate the participation of Spanish companies in future tenders for public works in Saudi Arabia. At present, six large Spanish business groups are present in Saudi Arabia, taking part in 23 projects.

In 2015, Spain was the country with the largest number of companies among the major firms in the world in the infrastructure sector. Nine out of the top 37 firms in that list were Spanish, with a portfolio of projects of almost 75 billion euros.
