The agreement is a consequence of the contacts that were established during the visit of the Uruguayan delegation, led by its chairman Tabaré Vázquez, to Spain last October. At these meetings a series of projects that Uruguay wants to develop in the short term were analysed.
The State Railways Administration of Uruguay (Administración de Ferrocarriles del Estado, AFE) is working on a 2017-2021 investment plan to increase its transport capacity, reduce travel times and improve safety levels.
The plan initially includes completing the restoration process of the line to Río Branco to fully renovate it from 2019 onwards in order to meet the expected demand and the planned mining and cement projects. There will also be an investment in staff training and the incorporation of technologies that make operation and management more efficient.
