The contract has an option to fit the units with battery packages to enable them to run on the line section between Papakura and Pukekohe, which is not currently electrified. The units would replace the old diesel units that are currently in service on this section.

In 2011, the city of Auckland awarded CAF the supply of 57 electric units and their maintenance for 12 years. Those units were commissioned in 2014, and have since covered a total of over 11 million kilometres.

The new units will be similar to those previously supplied and will consist of two cabbed end motor cars and one intermediate trailer car, with a total capacity for 380 passengers.
