Renfe approved to bid for operation of rail franchises in the United Kingdom

The UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) has granted Renfe the pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) passport, the required document that covers rail franchise competitions in the country, on whose application process the Spanish operator worked during 2017.

This is a new step in the internationalisation strategy of the operator as part of the Ministry of Public Works’ 2018-2020 Transport and Infrastructure Internationalisation Plan.

Renfe submitted its request to DfT in November 2017 and, once analysed all the documentation provided, the UK’s Department for Transport has granted the operator the pre-qualification passport, which illustrates the company’s suitability as a potential operator in the United Kingdom.

Renfe will soon begin analysing the upcoming franchise competitions. Among the imminent ones is the Cross Country franchise, whose renewal process DfT is scheduled to start this year.
