Thales Spain to modernise a 48-km section on Egypt’s railway network

Egypt National Railways (ENR) has awarded Thales Spain the railway modernisation of the 48 km Cairo-Benha section on the line that connects Egypt’s capital city with Alexandria, a line that carries more than 25 million passengers per year.

The project will improve traffic safety and will allow trains to travel at a speed of up to 160 km/h, as opposed to the current 120 km/h. Traffic volumes are also expected to double. All of these changes will increase passenger and goods capacity on the backbone line that links the north and south of the country from Alexandria to Cairo and all the way to Aswan.

The project, which will harmonize the technology along the entire Cairo-Alexandria railway line, involves the supply of nine electronic interlocking devices, 11 new level crossings and track elements, as well as the overhaul of associated energy systems, refurbishment of existing technical buildings and construction of new ones in different locations.
