Wallonia transport operator (TEC) has announced the awarding of the contract for the construction, equipment and maintenance of the first light rail line for the Belgian city of Liège to the Tram’Ardent consortium, in which CAF participates. The company will supply 20 light rail vehicles (LRVs) as well as signalling, telecommunications and power systems.

The Tram’Ardent consortium, preferred bidder of the international tender launched by the Walloon Regional Transport Authority in 2016, comprises partners from the engineering and construction group Colas; CAF, which has expressed its intention to establish a subsidiary in the Wallonia Region; and financial partner DIF.

The contract, a public-private partnership for the “Reorganization and modernization of the Liège urban public transport network - Planning of a light rail line”, includes the design, building, financing and maintenance of the line, which is due to be commissioned by the second quarter of 2022. Wallonia Transport Authority will be responsible for the operation.

The line will have 21 stations along an 11.7 km route, 90% of which is in a reserved lane section. The line will close an intermodal triangle formed by the Guillemins high-speed railway station, the bus station and the light rail station, which is to become the backbone of transport for the urban area of Liège.
