RL Components, CAF Group subsidiary, has presented at Tranvía de Zaragoza´s facilities the first tram front-end in the world produced entirely using additive technology.

RL Components presents first tram front-end manufactured with additive technology

(19/11/2018)

The components, which have already been fitted to CAF’s Urbos trams providing service in Zaragoza, are manufactured as mono-bloc parts and printed only once, and can produce parts of up to five metres in size.

The employed polymeric material eliminates the use of traditional composites, avoiding the need for resins and other derivatives in component manufacturing, which results in a more environmentally-friendly solution and improved recyclability.

RL Components has developed the solution in partnership with CAF Digital and Design Solutions, and has secured approval for manufacturing components with advanced polymers after satisfying the highest railway industry standards for fire, smoke and impact.

The project involves the design and additive manufacturing of parts with different dimensions and complex geometrics, thus breaking the dependency on moulds and original patterns and offering a competitive alternative in the supply of spare parts.
