Comsa and Korea’s railway research centre to develop high-durability synthetic ballast

Comsa and the technology centre Korea Railroad Research Institute, which forms part of the National Research Council of Science and Technology, South Korea's main R&D entity, will develop the Ballaxt project to create a new high-durability synthetic ballast.

(29/03/2019)

The agreement will enable the development of a new ballast from synthetic materials with the aim of improving its resistance and durability, as well as reducing the costs associated with track maintenance. Ballaxt (Extended durability optimised ballast) is a project funded by the European Commission through the ERDF programme, and with the support of Acció, the Catalan agency for business competitiveness.

COMSA and the Korean technology centre will jointly research new materials to create an artificial ballast, adaptable in shape, size, weight and composition and more resistant, which improves mechanical behaviour, increases the useful life of the railway bed and reduces maintenance costs. This new product will also limit the environmental impact of working natural rock quarries.
