The contract, awarded by Uruguay’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works, has a construction budget of 735 million euros and includes the maintenance of the infrastructure for a period of 18 years.
Sacyr leads the winning consortium, Grupo Vía Central, which also includes the Uruguayan companies Saceem and Berkes and the French company NGE. The consortium will be responsible for financing, design, construction and renovation over a period of 36 months, as well as for maintenance of the project.
In addition to the Paso de los Toros-Montevideo route, the consortium will operate on secondary railway branches, so that a total of 340 kilometres of tracks will be installed. The new line will have a new signalling system and the existing level crossings will be modernized.
As part of the project, the 25 stations and passenger stops will be renovated and the existing structures will be adapted to the new track. At some points, the project plans the construction of new structures to eliminate interference between rail and road traffic. In addition, an acoustic impact study will be carried out in education and health centres, and acoustic screens will be installed in some points to reduce sound levels.
