DHL Supply Chain Iberia’s business unit Grupag has launched a new intermodal service for exporting fresh fruit and vegetables to The Netherlands and Belgium, combining railway transport with road transport.

New direct train service from Valencia to Rótterdam to transport fruit and vegetables

(25/09/2019)

The intermodal service is using a train which departs from the Valencian municipality of Silla and heads to Rotterdam. From there the produce is transported by road to Amsterdam and Brussels, destinations that receive 10,000 tonnes a year of Spanish fresh fruit and vegetables. Furthermore, the company plans to extend the rail route to France and Germany in the next few months.

DHL Supply Chain Iberia’s new train service is being provided for Valencia Trading Office (VTO), dedicated to importing and exporting fruit and vegetables for the entire Metro group, to which Makro belongs.

Operations

The produce is loaded in Silla every Tuesday at 18:00 and reaches Rótterdam on Thursday at 21:00. From there it is transported by road to Amsterdam and Brussels and reaches its destinations on Friday before 10.00, maintaining the refrigeration chain. The new intermodal journey emits 43,212 g of CO2 per tonne-km compared to 162,960 g with road transport for the exact same journey.
