UITP Knowledge Brief: “Metros: the backbone of mobile cities and sustainable communities”

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) has published the Knowledge Brief “Metros: the backbone of mobile cities and sustainable communities”, based on the conclusions drawn at the Assembly held in Madrid in October.

UITP Knowledge Brief: “Metros: the backbone of mobile cities and sustainable communities”

(19/12/2019)

The Assembly, which coincided with the celebration of the centenary of Madrid’s metro system, emphasized the contribution of metros to sustainability. In 2017, urban rail transport avoided the traffic of 133 million cars in 178 cities across the world every day.

This brief highlights the technical, economic, political, social and environmental benefits delivered by metro networks. It also emphasizes the idea that those benefits can be further amplified with fully automated metros. On this matter, the UITP has released a second and complementary Knowledge Brief called “The benefits of full metro automation”.

In the coming five years, full automation is expected to become a priority in the design of new metro lines. The UITP Knowledge Brief on automation sets out five key dimensions that need to be considered throughout the implementation of automated metros: mobility, safety, affordability, ecology and humanity.
