CAF Signalling performs Automatic Train Operation tests for Dutch Railways

(22/01/2020)

This test, conducted together with the Dutch operator, is a milestone, as it is the first time an ATO system over ETCS is tested in passenger trains running on high-density lines. A pilot test in particular was carried out without passengers where an SNG train run automatically from Swifterbant to Kampen Zuid, on the Hanzelijn line, stopping also automatically and at scheduled time in Dronten station.

Due to the high occupancy of Dutch rail lines and as part of the analysis that NS is doing to optimize their operation, the Dutch operator asked CAF Signalling to experiment with this new technology and evaluate the benefits they can obtain.

These tests, defined also in the frame of Shift2Rail, are part of a test campaign that will allow NS to test different functionalities of the ATO over ETCS during the next few months.
