UITP study tour to four urban rail networks in Spain

(20/03/2020)

The four rail networks are Metro de Madrid, Renfe Cercanías, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (the operator of the suburban railway network in Barcelona) and Barcelona Metro. The choice of Madrid and Barcelona is due to the fact that both cities run two of the most extensive urban rail systems in Europe. In addition, these cities have invested in major depot and maintenance facilities, stations and control centres.

The course includes presentations by the local transport authority on the rail strategy and developments in Madrid, as well as presentations by the four rail operators on their current rail system and future developments on operations, vehicles, technology, infrastructure, maintenance and asset management, and innovation.
