“Haramain High Speed Railway”, the Desert Train book

(25/06/2020)

The book describes the process to build the railway superstructure, systems and trains comprised in the second phase for the development of the project of the high-speed railway line between Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia, as well as the commissioning of commercial services from 11th October 2018.

The bilingual book (Spanish/English) has 224 pages and is profusely illustrated. Its format is 30 x 24 cm and is offered to Vía Libre readers for the special price of 30 Euros plus shipping costs (to order contact at suscripciones@ffe.es).

Mecca-Medina

The second phase in the construction of the rail line that connects both cities, the first high-speed railway service in the Middle East, started in 2012. The maximum commercial speed of the line, on which trains operate in a desert environment, is 300 km/h.

The second phase of the Haramain High Speed Railway has involved a work of enormous technical complexity, on which innovative solutions have been applied to face singular problems on a ground exposed to extreme climate and orographic conditions, such as very high temperatures, accumulation of sand and dust and movement of dunes.

Thus, many innovations have been carried out on the railway route itself, like sand traps, containment systems and the application of slab track and ballasted track. These innovations are based on studies performed by the companies that make up the Mecca-Medina High Speed Spanish consortium as well as Spanish contractors and public organizations.
