(24/09/2020)

As part of the Horizon 2020 Program of the European GNSS Agency (GSA), RAILGAP focuses on the development of innovative, high-precision solutions for obtaining basic terrain data and digital maps of railway lines, which constitute essential elements for positioning trains with unprecedented reliability and efficiency in rail operations.

RAILGAP addresses these challenges with a method that will use commercial streams to capture massive amounts of data. This is to improve the accuracy of mapping in complex areas (urban areas, with abundant vegetation, etc.), extending GNSS coverage on the railway.

The project, which will begin in autumn 2020, will contribute to improving the sustainability of the ERTMS system and the command and control systems for the modernization of regional and local lines, with the consequent benefit for users. Likewise, it will also allow reducing the energy consumption of these systems, increasing their economic and environmental efficiency.
