Madrid-Barcelona High Speed Rail, a Ter4Rail success story

The TER4RAIL Project – Transversal Explanatory Research Activities for Rail, composed of seven partners from five European countries, has presented a report that gathers examples of European success stories on which rail transport has played a vital role. One of these stories is the Madrid-Barcelona High Speed Rail.

Madrid-Barcelona High Speed Rail, a Ter4Rail success story

(23/10/2020)

The project, funded by Shift2Rail under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, carries out transversal activities in order to improve the efficiency of railway research and innovation. The TER4RAIL consortium, led by EURNEX, includes the associations UIC, UITP, UNIFE and NEWOPERA, the Newcastle University and the Spanish Railways Foundation (Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, FFE).

The consortium has produced many open access documents, among which is the recently published report that includes the Madrid-Barcelona high speed line as one of its success stories. The case is analysed by researchers from FFE’s Strategy, Innovation and Training Department, who value the positive effects of this high-speed line that has been in service since 2008 and nowadays accounts for the highest number of passengers of the Spanish High-Speed system.

The line connects the two most populous urban agglomerations in the country, meaning 11 million of potential users. From the environmental point of view, it has prevented the emission of 4.2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and contributed to energy savings of 19,000 GW/h. In the Spanish case High Speed Rail becomes something similar to a “national metro system” capable of moving millions of passengers in a few hours, bringing them to the heart of the cities.
