This is the fourth Southern Alliance Program package of the Victoria state, awarded to Acciona in consortium with the Australian companies Coleman Rail, WSP, and Metro Trains Melbourne, as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project, which started in 2018 and plans to remove 75 level crossings in the Melbourne metropolitan area.
Work awarded to Acciona includes the construction of two new railway stations in Greensborough and Montmorency, the duplication of around three kilometres of track between both stations, and 1.5 kilometres of new track between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen.
The project, which is due for completion in 2022, also includes upgrading signalling along sections of the line and will make it possible to increase train services, reduce crowding on peak trains and provide better connections to public transport in Melbourne’s northeast.
