Robotic solution for track weed removal

The European Rover4RT project consortium, formed by Zenia Labs, Exom Engineering, Alpha Laser and Tecnalia, has completed the first phase of the development of a robotic solution for track weed removal through the effects of laser.

In phase 1, two experiments have concluded. The first one has made it possible to test the laser capacity to remove vegetation on the railway tracks as an alternative to chemical herbicides such as the glyphosate, which will no longer be used in the near future.

The second experiment has been useful to check an innovative retractable system of robot fixation to the track that ensures maintenance is performed with no traffic interruptions. Both systems have been integrated into a robotic solution together with the vision systems to identify the plants to be removed.

Phase 2

From May 2021 on, phase 2 of the development of the system has continued. During this phase, the robotic solution itself as well as the control and navigation system will be improved in order to increase efficiency. Also, the possibility of launching in the short run a part of its subsystems for track maintenance tasks as a commercial product is under consideration.

This Rover4RT initiative is being developed within the framework of the Esmera project, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme.
