The award recognizes the measures implemented to improve air quality inside the units, promoted jointly by the City Council and the Tramways, and for the studies of the “health strategy for the users of the Tram”, related to the air purification system, carried out together with the University of Zaragoza and the Institute of Health Research of Aragon. The Zaragoza Tram was also a finalist in the “Most Improved System” category.

For the first time in its almost 11 years in service, the Zaragoza Tram has managed to be recognized in two consecutive editions of the awards, given that in the 2020 edition it was awarded in the “Best Customer Initiative” category, for all the measures implemented against Covid-19. The actions undertaken consisted of keeping windows open to improve air circulation, opening the doors automatically at each stop, installing PM2.5 filters in all air conditioning units and changes in the return air of the equipment, in order to increase the amount of air that comes in from outside.

The research work to guarantee air quality in trams has continued with the study of an air purification technology that neutralizes the effects of viruses such as Covid-19 or the flu, as well as allergens and other harmful particles, making the air that passengers breathe even cleaner than that outside. This process neutralizes odors inside the vehicle, too.
