Captrain’s Iberian gauge Euro6000 locomotives already in service

The operator Captrain has put into service its first Iberian gauge Euro6000 electric locomotives manufactured by Stadler. They are part of the framework contract between Captrain Spain and Alpha Trains for the supply of up to 21 units, of which 14 have already been delivered (eight standard gauge and six Iberian gauge).

These dual-voltage locomotives (3,000 and 25,000 volts) will be able to operate on the entire Spanish network, including the new Pajares tunnels or the lines in process of electrification under 25kV ac such as the Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunto and the Medina del Campo-Salamanca-Portugal. They will also be the first electric locomotives to haul cross-border rail freight between Spain and Portugal.

In 2017, Captrain Spain launched an international tender to have Iberian gauge locomotives, with the two voltages and with conventional Spanish and Portuguese signalling, that could receive ERTMS and haul trains of up to 750 metres on the networks of both countries, where the ramps often exceed 20 thousandths. In addition, a second version for international gauge was requested.

In 2018, Captrain Spain signed with Alpha Trains the leasing in the very long term of up to 21 Stadler’s newly built Euro6000 units. At the same time, Alpha Trains and Stadler Valencia signed a framework contract for the acquisition of this multisystem six-axle Euro6000 machine.
