On 20th December 2022, the Beniel-Murcia 16-km long section that allows the high-speed connection between Madrid and Murcia came into operation. The project has had an investment of 410 million Euros, amount that includes the underground burying of the line at its arrival in Murcia.

The Spanish high speed network has more than 4,000 kilometres of rail tracks in which over 60 million Euros have been invested. The arrival of the high speed in Murcia completes the Levante Corridor, and progress is now being made in the Mediterranean Corridor towards Almería and Granada and the connection with Cartagena.
Commercial operations started with eight daily services with a journey that takes only 2 hours and 45 minutes, which saves almost 30 minutes compared to the best current travel time. Renfe has programmed eight daily AVE services, four in each direction, between Murcia and Madrid, which offers passengers 2,824 daily seats.
The new frequencies start or end at Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station and Murcia del Carmen station, and stop in Orihuela and Elche. In addition, there are another four daily AVE services that depart or reach Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station. In this case, travel time for this journey is 3 hours and 25 minutes, with five intermediate stops.
Trains
At the moment, trains from Madrid will reach the provisional Murcia del Carmen station, a rail infrastructure with two underground tracks and a central platform that can be accessed using the stairs, escalators or a lift.
These services are covered with trains of the 112 series. Each unit is made up of twelve fully accessible cars with a capacity for 353 seats each. Eight of them are standard class, three are comfort class, and one is a restaurant car. This model can reach 330 km/h, although the maximum speed it currently runs at is 300 km/h. It offers reclining seats and footrests, individual reading lights, folding tables, and video/audio and radio outlets. All seats have 220V electrical connections.
