Saudi Arabia tests CAF trainsets for new passenger service on North-South line

Saudi Arabia’s North-South line will be operative at the beginning of 2017, following tests conducted successfully between Riyadh and Al Majma'ah on a train supplied by CAF. The trains will operate both daytime and overnight services over a 1,250 km route linking Riyadh, Unayzah, Buraydah (Al Qassim), Ha’il, Al Jawf and the northern city of Al Qurayyat.

(16/11/2016)

The Spanish company CAF is supplying a fleet of trains for both daytime and overnight services under contracts signed in 2012 and 2014, which include six diesel-electric power trains: four trains for day services with two power cars and nine coaches, and two trains for night services with two power cars and thirteen coaches.

Train lengths will be variable to match demand. A standard day trainset will have seats for 444 passengers while the night train will offer berths and seating for 377 passengers.

In total, trains can form compositions with seven types of vehicles for different purposes: sleeping and restaurant cars, car carriers and four types of cars with seating in different classes. Trains also include areas for passengers with reduced mobility, family areas and sections reserved for prayer.
