Renfe has announced that it will allocate a line item close to one million Euros to implement a measurement and management system of the carbon footprint generated by the Group’s operations. The system has been awarded to the company GreeMko Sistemas y Gestión Ambiental, which in April 2021 participated in the tender ‘Projects for sustainable solutions’, called in the context of the TrenLab program.

With the development of this project, Renfe aims to have the resources and the specialised counselling necessary to undertake the implementation of a digitised system that measures and manages the carbon footprint of the company’s operations. This is Renfe’s first step to reduce greenhouse gases.
This initiative will start with a thorough analysis of the emission sources, especially those that are indirect and produced by electrical or thermal energy generated in third-party facilities but obtained and consumed for the activity of the company. This report will also include the emissions produced by sources that are not owned or controlled by the operator, such as the burning of fuels in furnaces, boilers or vehicles, as well as the fugitive emissions of gases and chemical products.
This task of accurate identification of the emission sources and the access to a methodology based on management software will make it possible to measure, report and ensure the traceability of data in order to manage the carbon footprint of the organisation.
