Renfe has designed a training program for the Secretariat of National Defense of Mexico, the future operator of the Mayan Train, of 850 hours for a total of 50 train drivers and 30 traffic controllers. This training has been developed in different groups since January 2023 and in several centres in both countries.

The training program has been exclusively designed for the Secretariat of National Defense of Mexico, future operator of this railway network. Classes will take place at different locations in Mexico City and at the Spanish operator’s training centre in Malaga, with driving practices on board Renfe trains in Spain also included in the program.
The final phase of the training will take place on the ground, in the vehicles and routes of the Mayan Train. The process will involve a total of six months of theoretical and practical training with Renfe trainers. After a week in Madrid, aspiring train drivers are completing the next phase of the program at the Renfe Training Centre in Malaga, headquarters that debuted with this training project for Mexico with the first class of drivers of the Mayan Train, which ended its program in July 2023.
At these facilities, the second class has completed one more month of theoretical training and has also begun the three months of practical training, in driving simulators and on board different models of Renfe trains: Civia on the Cercanías Málaga network and AVE trains on trips to Madrid, Granada or Córdoba. All this to become familiar with the vehicles and systems similar to those they will have in Mexico.
At the same time as the future train drivers are being prepared, Renfe has also carried out the training of 30 traffic managers in a single group. These students began their training in Mexico City on August 28 and have travelled to Spain to complete their training cycle in November.
