The connections take place without the change of locomotives when crossing the border, and they reinforce the multimodal offer and position of this infrastructure as the main Mediterranean freight transport hub. They are the only connections with a European gauge in a Spanish port, and they complement Barcelona’s maritime connectivity.
These direct connections involve significant time saving and an improvement of the competitiveness of the logistics companies, since they speed up goods transport and avoid the need to change locomotives or transship containers, which up to now was unavoidable when entering France.
In addition, they offer environmental benefits and improve transit times for Barcelona’s maritime traffic with the transport of goods by railway to the south of France, which reduces journey times compared to sea shipping links to Northern European ports, traditional gateway for freight that subsequently reach the areas of Toulouse and Lyon.
