CAF to supply six units for Omaha new tram network in the United States

CAF has been awarded the contract to supply six Urbos platform trams that will operate on Omaha’s future tram network in Nebraska, United States. These units will be the first vehicles equipped with onboard energy storage systems to be manufactured by the company for this country.

The contract includes the corresponding depot parts and special tools, and it also provides an option to acquire up to 29 additional units in the future. The base amount of the contract is around 50 million Euros.

These are three-module trams with a 100% low-floor design. They are equipped to operate using either overhead catenary power lines or Onboard Energy Storage Systems (OESS) on catenary-free track sections. This will be the first time that CAF will manufacture this type of rolling stock, which has the capacity to operate on sections without a catenary infrastructure, for United States.

The project’s scope includes both the design and construction of the infrastructure and the trams, as well as the operation and maintenance of the system. The network will involve an almost five-kilometre long route and will comprise 16 stops. The system is scheduled to enter into commercial operation in 2027.
