Spain urges France to confirm its commitment to cross-border connections

Spain recently held a meeting in the town of Canfranc under the theme ‘Aragon in the context of European Cross-border Transport Infrastructures’. The Spanish representatives expressed their willingness to collaborate in the preservation of the sections shared with France and to promote the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors closest to the Pyrenees.

During the meeting, the main actions being carried out in the Aragon region were detailed, such as those underway for the complete renovation of the Huesca-Canfranc line, which is part of the Global Network and which will be back in service this year. Once this section is completed, work will continue on the line with the improvement of signalling and telecommunications facilities.

Furthermore, in order to recover rail traffic with France, an informative study on the adaptation of the Somport tunnel was approved and, at the beginning of January this year, Adif issued the tender for the design of the construction project for an amount of 2.76 million Euros.

In this sense, the Spanish representatives insisted at this event that, in order to re-establish traffic between Canfranc and Bedous, collaboration between the two countries is necessary, as well as between the closest administrations, such as those of Aragon and Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
