Use of LIDAR technology to reinforce vegetation control on the railway network

Adif will use airborne LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to obtain information about the vegetation surrounding railway lines and their facilities, and to reinforce vegetation control management on the railway network.

In this case, a 3D geometry model and track images were obtained from dynamic scanning using mobile mapping system technology, and infrastructure elements were inventoried based on the scanned information. This project improved the management of railway assets, particularly in the area of reference contour gauge measurement and validity.

Prototype of intelligent system

LIDAR technology has also been used in the Sentinel project, developed in consortium by Adif, Alstom, Insitu and Ferrovial, with the aim of creating a new prototype of an intelligent infrastructure management system using structured mass data to optimise maintenance operations. The tests consisted in integrating various systems, including LIDAR, into a maintenance vehicle to digitise the infrastructure between Madrid Chamartín and Torrejón de Velasco.
