The project to reopen the Somport railway tunnel and the international traffic connection has been awarded

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a 2.2 million Euro contract, through Adif, for the drafting of the construction project to refurbish the Somport railway tunnel (civil works and track works), on the Zaragoza-Canfranc-Pau line, to reopen the international connection between Spain and France via the province of Huesca.

The Somport tunnel is a strategic trans-Pyrenean axis included in the Global TEN-T Network. It is one of the railway crossings between Spain and France which, once operational, will improve cross-border passenger and freight traffic, as it will provide a connection between areas with important logistics hubs that currently have no direct rail connection.

The Spanish and French governments agreed on a common cooperation strategy embodied in the ‘Study for the reopening of the Somport railway tunnel’, within the framework of the project ‘Overcoming missed connections between Spain and France: Pau-Zaragoza cross-border railway section. Reopening of the Somport railway tunnel’.
