Informative study for reopening of Somport tunnel, approved

The reopening of the tunnel is a key step towards re-establishing rail traffic between Spain and France through Huesca, with the opening of the Zaragoza-Canfranc-Pau railway line. This is intended to improve connections with Europe and take a further step in promoting freight traffic by train and the decarbonisation of transport.

The overall budget for the works on the Spanish side amounts to €93 million, with European funding from the Connecting Europe Facility 2022. They are also included in the Global Network of Trans-European Transport Networks.

The actions that are finally approved in this informative study will be developed in the construction project for the reopening of the tunnel. At present, the Spanish rail infrastructure administrator, Adif, has already put out to tender the contract for the drafting of the civil works and track construction project, and is speeding up the procedures to start work as soon as possible.

The technical studies for its reopening are part of the set of actions to reopen the Zaragoza -Canfranc-Pau line to international traffic and which will allow the creation of a complementary railway corridor to the Mediterranean and Atlantic for the connection between Spain and France.
