CAF to supply trams for Bologna and Rome

CAF has been awarded the contract for the supply of up to 60 trams for Bologna and their maintenance for four years, as well as a contract to supply 20 additional trams for Atac, the operator that manages public transport in the Rome metropolitan area. As a whole, the two contracts are worth approximately 200 million Euros.

The contract with the City of Bologna, which also includes the supply of spare parts and special tools for the fleet, provides for an initial delivery of 33 units for a value of more than 130 million Euros. The agreement envisages a possible extension — with a maximum term of six years — for the order of up to 60 additional trams, or even as many as 72 trams, all of them based on the Urbos platform.

Each vehicle will comprise five modules and will have a capacity for more than 200 passengers along its 35-metre length. It will also be fitted with an on-board energy storage system that enables catenary-free unit operation. This rolling stock will be used for the new tramway network planned for Bologna, which will have four lines: red, yellow, green and blue.

In addition, the operator Atac, the company that manages public transport in the Rome metropolitan area, has made use of a first extension option provided for in the tram supply contract signed which CAF at the end of 2023. The initial contract covered the design and manufacture of 40 trams, with the possibility of increasing the order to a further 81 vehicles, making a total of 121.

The signing of this second contract involves the supply of another 20 additional units, which are also fitted with CAF’s on-board energy storage system, and includes maintenance tasks for five years. This renovation of the fleet is aimed to replace the old units that are currently in operation on the six existing lines of the network, as well as to acquire units that will operate on the new lines soon to be built in the Italian capital.
