First Saudi Arabia train fitted with CAF´s ERTMS technology enters service

Saudi Arabia´s state-owned railway operator, SAR, has launched the country´s first train equipped with CAF's European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) technology on passenger services on the Riyadh-Dammam line.

The installation of the CAF's Auriga ETCS system is the first step in the SAR operator’s modernization plan, which involves a multi-million investment. This technology allows the introduction of advanced signalling to ERTMS Level 2, increasing safety and efficiency on the network. Auriga has been designed with state-of-the-art technology to offer reliability, reduce delays and improve rolling stock performance.

CAF is currently working in SAR’s strategic train maintenance and overhaul facilities in Riyadh to have the whole fleet enabled to operate under ERTMS Level 2 in the first quarter of 2026.
