The damage became apparent after the ship had docked at its final destination of Valparaíso, Chile, before being received by the operator. While the accident at the Peruvian port is being investigated with the navy agency responsible for the train’s cargo, CAF will have to build a new train, whose cost, estimated at 6.5 million euros, is expected to be covered by the contracted insurance companies.
The accident will not delay the opening of Line 6, which remains on schedule for the second half of 2017. The operation will require 12 trains, seven of which have already reached Santiago.
Each train takes around 14 months to be built and starts a one-month sea voyage from the port of Bilbao to the port of Valparaíso. 22 trains for Line 3 and 15 trains for Line 6 of Santiago Metro network are being assembled at CAF’s plant in Beasain.
