Irun station will have variable gauge axle change system for freight transport

Adif Alta Velocidad has awarded the projects for the track assembly and electrification works to build a variable gauge axle change system for freight transport in the Irun station, with a planned global investment of 764,728 Euros.

(05/05/2022)

This project is based on the variable gauge axle system technology for freight wagons, authorised by the State Railway Safety Agency, which allows freight trains to travel between the various borders with different track gauges.

Therefore, a freight train equipped with this movable rolling axle can alter its wheel gauge when it drives through a gauge changer and thus make a journey running on standard gauge sections and on Iberian gauge sections.

The system solves the problem of the existence of networks with different track gauges, which significantly weighs down rail freight traffic. Eliminating load breakage points will shorten the journey times of goods, and the associated cost of interchanging different gauge axles or transferring loads between wagons will be reduced.

The system consists of a wheelset, wheels and axle joint by the gauge changer and block system. In the train compositions equipped with this technology, the gauge change is made when the wagon enters the changer and a rail automatically unlocks the wheels, which are moved until their final position, where they are re-locked.
