The Dutch national operator, NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), has awarded CAF the contract for the supply of 60 double-decker trains destined for intercity services.

CAF to supply 60 double-decker trains to Dutch Railways

(13/01/2023)

The contract consists of the supply of 30 four-car units and other 30 six-car units, as well as technical support for maintenance. The value of the newly signed contract amounts to more than €600M and includes options for further units.

The units for NS will be CAF’s first double-decker Civity platform units developed for suburban, intercity and regional services. The vehicles will run at a maximum speed of 160 km/h and each train set will consist of a combination of single deck and double deck cars, the single deck cars offering level access.

The first units are scheduled for operation on the intercity routes that cross the entire country by 2028, and some of the extension options contemplated in the contract could incorporate train versions that can run on cross-border routes to Germany and Belgium.
