Comsa to take part in voltage conversion of Lisbon-Cascais line

The Spanish-Portuguese consortium made up of Comsa and Fergrupo (its Portuguese subsidiary) has been awarded the contract for the modernisation of the Lisbon Cais do Sodré-Cascais line in Portugal, which includes the conversion of the existing 1.5 kV direct voltage electrification system to 25 kV alternating voltage, which is standard on the nearby country's network.

The project, worth 31,590,000 Euros, will allow the electrification of the line to be brought into line with the rest of the Portuguese network and reduce the energy cost of Portuguese Railways, CP. In addition, the works include seven new escapes to allow counter-rail traffic, changes to the layout at Oeiras and Cascais stations, and the creation of a connection between the Cascais line and the Carcavelos maintenance centre.

The project comprises the reconfiguration of tracks at Algés, Oeiras, Carcavelos, São Pedro and Cascais stations, the new east connection to the Carcavelos rolling stock yard and the installation of new turnouts at Santos, Belém and Santo Amaro. A substation will be built at Sete Rios and a new ETCS level 2 signalling and control system will be installed. In addition, video surveillance and information systems will be implemented, and work will be carried out at stations and stops, level crossings and track crossings at halts.
