The Chambers of Commerce of the Atlantic come together to defend railway connections

The Chambers of Commerce of the North of Portugal, Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Burgos, Navarra, País Vasco and Nouvelle Aquitaine have recently signed the Declaration of the Chambers of Commerce of the Atlantic Arc. The objective is to strengthen the cooperation mechanisms in order to work together to face several challenges. In the field of transport, they advocate completing the Atlantic Corridor in due course and adapting rail connection and intermodality.

The Declaration has been written based on a shared diagnosis of the main challenges and opportunities to improve competitiveness of the regions of the Atlantic Arc and the main scopes of cooperation. The signatories show their concern about the risk that the peripheral condition of this area leads to a loss of competitiveness, attractiveness as a territory and capacity of influence. To avoid this, they express their will to create a forum for reflection and cooperation around the challenges that must be addressed by the regions of this area.

In the field of transport, in order to improve connectivity they will work on ‘the development of the necessary efforts to complete the Atlantic Corridor in due course, with respect to its basic network, for 2030’. In addition, they will collaborate to boost and adapt rail connection and intermodality through the Cantabrian Coast, as well as to promote a strategy of collaboration between the ports.

The Atlantic Corridor is part of the Trans-European Transport Network and the deadline for its completion is the year 2030. Its route will run on double track with international gauge, 25 kV AC electrification, and will have ERTMS implemented. The objective of this project is to increase freight traffic by rail and do it more competitive in comparison with other modes.
