CAF to supply 20 units for Oslo Metro

(29/05/2024)
The new M4000 units will be vehicles based on CAF's metro platform, called INNEO. These are three-car units, each of which will have three double doors on each side to ensure easy and quick access, thereby optimising stopping times at each of the stations. The trains will be designed to operate in the severe weather conditions in the Norwegian capital, including snow and extreme temperatures. All bogies will be motor bogies, improving the grip and traction of the unit during operation.

Furthermore, efficient energy consumption has been prioritised in order to achieve a sustainable vehicle. The trains will also be equipped with on-board batteries, enabling them to reach the next station without the need of catenary in the event of an accidental power cut. Finally, the vehicles will also be prepared for GoA4 autonomous driving if required in the future.

Network

The 20 trains acquired by Oslo’s public urban transport operator, Sporveien, will be incorporated into the operations of the city’s metro network, or T-Bane, which structures the city through its more than 85 kilometres of track. This network has six lines and is one of the most used means of transport in the city.

The initial investment of this order exceeds a value of €150 million, an amount that would increase should the customer decide to implement the option to acquire up to 90 additional units. This contract is in addition to the one obtained by CAF to supply 87 trams to the city, which are currently in the process of being delivered.
