Three new stops of Barcelona Tram now in service

On 10 November, a new section of Line T4 of Barcelona Tram came into operation, with three new stops: Monumental, Sicilia and Verdaguer. The new extension of Barcelona’s tram network introduces Alstom's catenary-free technology for the first time in Spain.

Alstom’s APS catenary-free technology consists of the installation of a third conductor rail on the track, which serves as a power supply system. This third conductor rail is divided into sections that are automatically activated and deactivated as the tram travels over them.

This ensures the safety of pedestrians and road users without compromising the autonomy of the trams in extreme weather conditions, or in the event of traffic cuts or any other incident that interrupts the movement of the convoys.

In addition, removing the need for catenary improves the integration of the system in specific areas of the urban environment, such as the Avenida Diagonal in Barcelona. To make the rolling stock compatible with the new technology, the APS elements required in the infrastructure have been installed and the 18 Citadis trams of the current fleet have been adapted.
