The 558-metre-long Gaintxurizketa tunnel is part of the Astigarra-Irun conventional railway section, in which the Spanish Railway Infrastructure Manager, Adif, is investing around 53 million Euros to implement standard gauge by adding a third rail, which will make it possible to extend the Vitoria/Gasteiz-Bilbao- San Sebastián high-speed line to the French border. Likewise, Adif is preparing the infrastructure for rolling highway services.

Work is currently focused on waterproofing and lining the interior. In the coming weeks, work will begin on the construction of the cut-and-cover tunnels at the entrance and exit junctions, and the new electrification system will be deployed, which will come into service once the concrete is laid on the final slab track, something that is scheduled for this summer.
