European Future Railway Mobile Communication System to be tested on Spanish network

Adif has put out to tender the contract for the initial phase of the pilot test for the railway telecoms systems Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) and Adaptable Communication System (ACS), which will take place on the Asunción Universidad-Matallana section of the León-Guardo Narrow Gauge Network.

This initiative is part of FP 2-R2DATO, one of the six first-generation flagship projects of the European R&D programme Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking (ERJU).

FP 2-R2DATO aims to develop the next-generation of railway traffic control systems and a digital and automatic train operation system that can become autonomous and scalable, taking advantage of digitalisation and automation.
FP2-MORANE-2 to validate the system

Within this flagship project, Adif is leading the preparatory activities for the demonstration of the FRMCS system and its connectivity with regional lines. The first phase of the project consists of building the necessary infrastructure for the subsequent development of a pilot test section of the FRMCS system, for which the Asunción Universidad-Matallana section, with a length of 25 kilometres, has been chosen.

FRMCS, the new mission-critical rail telecommunications system, will replace the current GSM-R mobile communications system and will improve rail operations by bringing the benefits of 5G to rail operational communications.
